Electronic Monitoring (EM) Fisheries Data Reviewer

This position is based at our headquarters in Anchorage, Alaska. The primary responsibility of the EM data reviewer will be the accurate and timely processing and review of data from different commercial fisheries. These currently include data from Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico and the Southern Ocean. This data includes video and sensor data collected by on-board electronic monitoring (EM) systems from vessel fishing trips.

Data Review:  Data collected by on-board EM systems is reviewed using Saltwater’s open source review software, established protocols and fishery specific templates to produce trip-level data summaries. The primary objective of the review in the AK Trawl  fishery is compliance monitoring, Fixed gear is catch accounting, the primary objective in menhaden fishery is to document marine mammal and sea turtle interactions. Additional responsibilities: Tasks will be assigned that may include HDD processing and copying, documentation and communication with various clients, and data storage/management, data reporting and analysis, responding to requests for specific video clips or images, assist with preparation of Vessel Monitoring Plans (VMPs), annotation of data files for the development of computer vision tools, the creation of new review techniques, and other related tasks.

Key Aspects of the Role

You will work closely with the leadership team and report directly to the EM Program Manager. Video review is a key component of Saltwater’s EM program.  The review team provides feedback to our technical team, management team, vessel operators and clients.

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Demonstrated computer aptitude/skills.
  • Marine science degree and/or previous experience as a fisheries observer.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and time management skills.

This is a full-time position based in Saltwater’s main office in Anchorage, Alaska. Relocation assistance will be provided, if necessary.
