Hawaii Observer Program

Hawaii Observers

Observers in Hawaii are deployed on longline tuna and swordfish vessels. This program is based out of Honolulu and involves collecting data on interactions with sea turtles, sea birds, and protected marine mammal species, as well as collecting information on target and bycatch species.

Vessels range in size from 49 to 100 feet and living and working conditions on these boats can be quite primitive. In the tuna fishery trips last about 21 days, while swordfish trips are typically about 30 days.
